Welcome to

Catherine Harpham Therapeutic Counselling

Being heard and feeling valued can be life changing.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Catherine Harpham Therapeutic Counselling.

Being a person centred counsellor, means I really value your unique experiencing of your world. I listen carefully to what you bring and offer you a space to offload what might be weighing you down. Through offering my compassion and heartfelt understanding , I work to help support you through whatever might feel off balance in your life right now.

I work in a flexible way and invite you to discover how sessions might work best for you. Some people may find it helpful to write things down and bring this to explore for example. Others may want to try shorter sessions, wish to colour/doodle or walk around whilst talking. It is your space and I really acknowledge what courage it can take to show up sometimes.

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.

What I DO NOT Do

  • I do not tell you what to do.....I am here to help and support you to discover what YOU feel is right for you

  • I will not rush you. This is your space and it is important to me that we take things at your pace. I recognise the importance of building trust.

  • I do not offer a quick fix. Exploring and healing can take time. It is your individual, unique journey on your timescale and I value that.

What I STRIVE TO DO

  • Offer you my full attention and kindness, whilst I listen carefully to really understand what your world is like.

  • Accept all that you are in the present moment.
  • Empower you to take the lead in exploring any beliefs, feelings or behaviours, that may need unravelling, to reconnect with your authentic self

More Information

Sessions

  • Sessions usually last 50 minutes, however if a shorter or longer session would work best for you, we can arrange this.
  • I offer a free 15 minute chat over the phone/online. This can be good to see if you feel the way I work fits for you and to ask any questions.
  • I would also be asking a few questions, to discover what your life would be like, if, for example, you had a magic wand. What would the picture of you achieving your goal look like? I have lots of creative bits and bobs out on the table too, so there is always an opportunity to work in a more creative way, should you choose to.
  • I also offer a 30 minute initial chat face to face, with a charge of £20 (due to room hire.)
  • You can have as many, or as few sessions as you feel necessary. They will be led by you. I do not tell you what to do. However, I get that it can feel very anxiety provoking to talk about uncomfortable things. If a structure suits you more, we can discuss what you feel you might need.
  • The first session will involve me asking some questions and finding out more about you. Questions are always welcome for me too.

Counselling can potentially help you to:

  • Learn more about yourself, leading to more understanding about your own needs and wants, perhaps leading to judging yourself less harshly as a result.
  • Understand what makes you feel stressed about certain situations and perhaps what steps you can take to reduce the impact this has on you.
  • It is your journey and we will take it at your pace.

A Little Bit About Me

The last few years have marked some huge shifts in my life. My children are my world and I am witnessing them preparing to fly the nest. This is a privilege, but also feels really difficult. It is through my children, that I have come to do the work I am doing now. I am forever grateful and massively proud to be their mum. I am also mum to 4 cats and a small dog.

Through my own recent counselling journey, I have had the heartfelt support of my counsellor through the anticipatory loss and eventual death of my Dad. No words can fully describe how this loss has impacted me and will forever. The value of a compassionate voice and her heartfelt words, will always be with me.

I am a Mental Health First Aider with Mental Health Motorbike and attend occasional motorbike events. I am also a volunteer counsellor with Cheshire Autism Practical Support. I get to attend talks and presentations and learn lots, helping run their peer support group for trainee counsellors.

I have worked as a Counsellor at ChildLine and at a Sixth Form College. My experience at both of those places still informs my work now.

My Qualifications and CPD

  • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Person centred)
  • Ecotherapy Training
  • Facilitating Groups training
  • Working creatively with Autistic people
  • Trauma Informed Training
  • Introduction to Sand Tray Therapy
  • Fully insured and Enhanced DBS checked

I have just started studying the MA Autism Spectrum at Sheffield Hallam University. This is an area that I have a professional and personal interest in. Alongside this , I am also studying for the Level 5 Counselling Children and Young People.

My CPD is always ongoing. I am a work in progress!
