Welcome to Catherine Harpham Therapeutic Counselling

Neuro-affirming counselling, helping to support authentic well-being through understanding, respect and connection

Everyone experiences the world differently - and that's something to be celebrated. My counselling practice is founded on person-centred and neuro-affirming values, creating space for you to explore, reflect and grow as your authentic self.

CORE VALUES

  1. EMPATHY

All forms of empathy, are valid and respected

2. AUTHENTICITY

Space to potentially unmask safely and feel seen. Although I recognise that this is not always possible or wanted

3.RESPECT

Your sensory and emotional experiences matter to me.

4.AUTONOMY

You lead the direction and pace of therapy - although we can always agree a structure if this works best for you.

5. JOY AND INTERESTS

Passions and interests are celebrated as sources of strength and positivity - although I also recognise that this may not always be the case for everyone.

BUT WHAT DOES THIS ACTUALLY MEAN ?

WHAT IS NEURO-AFFIRMING COUNSELLING?

Strengths based, identity affirming approach that respects neurological differences

  • It focuses on mental health and self-understanding, not on 'fixing' traits.

  • Our work is based on Carl Roger's person-centred approach, so focuses on empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard. It is your individual, unique journey, on your timescale.

  • I value your lived experience as the foundation for your journey

MY APPROACH

  • Is informed by my research and inspired by lived experience. I always invite questions and I make mistakes sometimes - I am human too!

  • I am committed to ongoing learning and reflection, I do not consider myself a specialist nor an expert.

  • I pay attention to communication, sensory and emotional differences and strive to help you feel empowered, to find your own answers.

  • Our sessions are led by you. Your needs, preferences and pace shape our work, as much as possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Sessions usually last 50 minutes, however if a shorter or longer session would work best for you, we can arrange this.
  • I offer a free 15 minute chat over the phone/online. This can be good to see if you feel the way I work fits for you and to ask any questions.
  • I would be asking a few questions, to discover what your life would be like, if, for example, you had a magic wand. What would the picture of you achieving your goal look like?
  • I also offer a 30 minute initial chat face to face, with a charge of £20 (due to room hire.)
  • You can have as many, or as few sessions as you feel necessary. They will be led by you. I do not tell you what to do. However, I get that it can feel very anxiety provoking to talk about uncomfortable things. If a structure suits you more, we can discuss what you feel you might need.

Counselling can potentially help you to:

  • Learn more about yourself, leading to more understanding about your own needs and wants, perhaps leading to judging yourself less harshly as a result.
  • Understand what makes you feel stressed about certain situations and perhaps what steps you can take to reduce the impact this has on you.
  • It is your journey and we will take it at your pace.
